Guidelines for Posters:

Document Setup and Programs:
The best program to use for poster layout is Illustrator 8.0, 9.0, 10 or 11.0 Creative Suite. Illustrator has the capability to make large document sizes and it handles files very well. Other layout programs have limitations when it comes to setting up paper size. Many do not go large enough for the average conference poster. Powerpoint and Canvas can also be used to layout posters. Powerpoint will only go to a 56" max document size.

Your poster will print out to the size set in your document setup settings. Please be sure this is set to the inch size you want your poster to be. When setting up your poster, your VERY FIRST STEP should be to set the document setup size to a proper poster size (example, 36" H x 60"W, NOT 8.5" H x 11" W). In Illustrator and Powerpoint, this is found under the File Menu, under Page Setup. In Canvas the document setup menu is under the Layout Menu. Please make this a FIRST step and not a LAST step. The printer is not able to take a smaller sized poster and print it a larger size. If your poster document settings are set to 36" x 60", the printer will print the poster 36" x 60". The printer cannot print your poster as a larger percentage, but it can print it as a smaller percentage. If you want a mini poster to use for proofing purposes or for bulletin boards, the size will be 50% of the size of your poster (example 18" x 30"). With the prices listed above, a mini proof will cost you $10 or $15 per print.

Or, you can find the templates on the Psychology server, under Users 1, Shared folder, Poster Templates folder.

Borders:
It is best to leave about a 1 inch border around the whole poster as this give it a nice appearance. Anything below a 1/2 inch will get cut off in printing. Please be aware of this, and leave plenty of space around the edges of your poster. The best way around this problem is to use one of the poster templates mentioned above.

Assistance:
If you need assistance setting up your poster please contact the VVRC graphics lab. The graphic designer will need all the images and text and an idea on how you need the poster organized. Please allow plenty of extra time for poster design and setup.

Time:
Please allow plenty of time to have your poster printed. During peak times (April & October) the Graphics Lab gets very busy. At those times, extra time is needed in producing and printing your poster.
