Welcome to the Vanderbilt Eye Institute Histology Core. The Core offers services to Vanderbilt Vision Research members on a first come first server basis, with priority given to jobs submitted by “investigators”, followed by those submitted by “associates”, and finally, “affiliates”.

Histology Service Policy and Procedure
The Histology Service will be administered according to the guidelines of the NEI Core grant that supports it. In short, the Core grant pays for labor and the investigator must pay for supplies.
Procedure
Please meet with Jennifer before any tissue is collected so that we can plan your histology project. When tissues are submitted, they must be accompanied by a Histology Service Work Order Form and an 1180 (see below). You must supply your own supplies and some charges do apply.

The following is a list of the most commonly used supplies, but that will depend on the project. I will let you know what you will need.
• Slides- Fisher #1255015 order by the gross (2 boxes/gross)

Charges
• Hematoxylin and eosin stain $1.50/slide
• Processing of paraffin block $5.00/block
• Unstained paraffin slide $0.50/slide
• Unstained frozen slide $0.75/slide
Payment
Payment can be accepted only through a signed 1180 form including the center number to charge. As mentioned, the 1180 must be delivered with the samples. After the project has been completed and all charges have been totaled for your order, the rest of the 1180 will be filled out by the VVRC and processed.

1. Where is the VVRC Histology Core Lab?

2. Who can use the VVRC Histology Core Lab?
Anyone associated with the VVRC can use the Histology Core Lab. This includes investigators funded by the NEI, as well as associates and affiliates of the VVRC.
3. How do I become a VVRC member?
Any scientist interested in ophthalmology and visual sciences can apply for VVRC membership. The first step is contacting the VVRC Director, Jeff Schall. He can be reached at jeffrey.d.schall@vanderbilt.edu.
4. How do I use the VVRC Histology Core Lab?
Start with an email to the histologist, jennifer.harvey@vanderbilt.edu. A meeting will then be arranged to discuss your needs for your project and make a detailed plan to address your special needs.
5.How long does it take to have my work completed?
Everyone’s project is important. Our goal is to work as quickly as we can to provide top quality work on the projects in the order they were received. If you have a deadline to meet, special consideration may be made in consultation with the histologist.
6.What do I need to bring with my samples?
A completed work order request and a signed 1180 funds transfer form.
7. What is the acknowledgement policy?
If you have used VVRC Histology Core services, it is appropriate to acknowledge the services of the Core in the following manner:

If the histologist has substantially assisted in the design, execution, and interpretation of you data, it is appropriate to consider an authorship role for the histologist in consultation with the Core Director.
